New Year New Me Ideas: 30 Small Resets That Actually Last (2027)

"New year new me" usually means a complete overhaul: new diet, new gym, new morning routine, all starting on January 1. It also usually means the old me is back by the third week of January.

There's a better version. Not a new person, just a few small resets that stick. Below are 30 new year new me ideas, each one small enough to start on a cold Monday in January, plus a short new year bucket list and a simple way to make it last.

Why reinvention fails and resets work

Changing everything at once means every new habit competes for the same energy. When one slips, they all slip, and it feels like proof you "can't do it."

A reset is smaller. You keep your life and change one or two things in it. The research on habits backs this up: in Lally et al. (2010), a new daily habit took a median of 66 days to become automatic. That's a long time to carry ten new habits. It's very doable for one.

So the rule for this list: pick one reset per area at most, and ideally just one overall.

Morning resets

  1. Phone stays out of reach for the first 30 minutes. Charge it in another room.
  2. Water before coffee. Leave the glass out the night before.
  3. Make your bed. The smallest possible win to start a day.
  4. Five minutes of daylight. Open the curtains, step outside, or sit by a window.
  5. Write down the one thing that matters today. Just one.

Morning resets live or die on the cue, because the first thing you see sets the tone. On iPhone, Daily Pact can show the day's habit as a Live Activity on your Lock Screen, so when you finally pick the phone up, the reset is waiting there before the news and the messages are.

Body resets

  1. A 10-minute walk after dinner. Short enough for rainy nights.
  2. 10 squats while the kettle boils. No gym, no kit.
  3. Same bedtime five nights a week. Choose the time, not the hours.
  4. A vegetable with lunch. Only lunch.
  5. A month off alcohol. If you want to try it, see Dry January with friends, and Alcohol Change UK's free resources.
  6. A January workout challenge. 31 days with an end date. Our January workout challenge has plans for beginners.

Mind resets

  1. Delete one app that eats your evenings. You can reinstall it in February if you miss it.
  2. Three good things before bed. Two minutes in a notebook.
  3. Five minutes of quiet a day. No phone, no podcast.
  4. One screen-free evening a week. Same night every week.
  5. Pick a word for the year. One word to steer small choices. Here are 52 word of the year ideas.

Home resets

  1. Clear the kitchen before bed.
  2. One item out of the house a day. 31 things gone by February.
  3. A 10-minute tidy each evening. Timer on, stop when it rings.
  4. Fix the one thing that annoys you daily. The drawer, the lightbulb, the wobbly chair.
  5. A fresh start corner. Clear one surface completely and keep it clear.

Money resets

  1. Track every purchase for 31 days. No budget yet. Just look.
  2. Cancel one subscription. Today, not "sometime."
  3. Automate a small saving on payday.
  4. A no-spend weekend in January. Plan free things for it in advance.

People resets

  1. Text one friend a day. A "thought of you" is enough.
  2. A weekly call to family. Same day, same time.
  3. Phones away at dinner. Once a week to start.
  4. Plan one thing a month with friends. Somebody has to organize. Make it you.
  5. Start one habit with someone. This is the reset that makes the others last, and it's the next section.

A new year bucket list (that's actually doable)

A new year bucket list is a nice counterweight to habits: one-off things to look forward to. Keep it short and small. Ten items you'll do beats fifty you won't.

  • Watch a sunrise in January
  • Cook a meal you've never made
  • Visit a town within two hours you've never been to
  • Go to one live event (a gig, a game, a play)
  • Swim outdoors once, when it's warm
  • Read one book everyone else has already read
  • Take a day trip with an old friend
  • Learn to make one cocktail or mocktail properly
  • Spend a whole day offline
  • Write a letter to yourself to open next New Year's Eve

The January reset: one habit, one friend, 31 days

Here's the simplest way to make a new year reset hold.

Pick one reset from the list above. Just one. Make it binary, so at bedtime you either did it or you didn't.

Pick one person. A friend, partner, sibling or coworker. They can pick a different reset. You just both check in every day. Wing and Jeffery (1999) found people who joined a weight-loss programme with friends were far more likely to keep the weight off at 10 months (66% versus 24% for those who came alone). Company is the strongest thing you can add.

The ask can be one message. Start a pact for your reset, send the link to your group chat or pick your friend from your contacts, and they're in. If it's a whole household doing a "January reset," invite everyone at once.

Do it for January. A month has an end you can see. That's the January Pact: January 1 to 31, 2027, one small habit and one friend. Our January challenge has a ready-made plan.

Watch out for Friday, January 8. Strava found that motivation tends to drop around the second Friday of January and calls it Quitter's Day. Check in with your friend on purpose that day.

Never miss twice. One missed day doesn't undo a habit (Lally et al. again). Two in a row is how quitting starts.

To keep track on paper, print our habit tracker and stick it on the fridge. Or use Daily Pact: you start a pact with your friend, each tap once a day, and you both see who showed up. For the research on why this works, read how to keep your New Year's resolutions.

Common questions

What does "new year new me" mean? It's the idea of using the new year to become a better version of yourself. It works best as a few small resets rather than a total reinvention.

What is a January reset? A short, deliberate restart in January: one or two small habits, done daily for the month. It's easier to keep than a year-long resolution because it has a clear end.

How do I start a new year reset if I'm already behind? Start on the next Monday or the first of the month. A fresh start doesn't have to be January 1.
