The short answer

Daily Pact

Daily Pact

Our pick5.0 on the App Store

Everything HabitShare did, plus the part it left out: doing the habit together.

Daily Pact keeps friends at the centre but turns the shared view into a shared challenge: one tap to check in, a leaderboard, notifications when someone checks in, and PactPause for the bad weeks. iPhone and Android, actively developed. 14 days free with everything, then $0.99 a month.

If that doesn't fit you

  • You want it free, with a community: Habit Huddle's free tier.
  • It's you and one friend, both on iPhone: BuddyUp, free.
  • Your friends stopped tracking: Cohorty gives you a cohort of strangers.
  • You'd enjoy a game with it: Habitica.

How we chose

We build Daily Pact, so read our pick with that in mind. Every app here was judged on the same questions: who notices when you skip, how fast the check-in is, what happens after a missed day, and what it really costs. We say plainly where another app does something we don't. The full policy is on our About page.

The shared challenge HabitShare never had

If you liked HabitShare for the friends part and wished it did more, Daily Pact is the natural next step. Instead of each person tracking alone and peeking at each other, your group is on the same challenge: one tap to check in, a leaderboard by completion, push notifications when a friend checks in, and PactPause so a bad week doesn't reset anyone. No friend to ask? Open pacts seat you with up to four people on the same habit in your timezone. It's actively developed, on both iPhone and Android, and rated 5.0 on the App Store.

Closest in spirit, with a community on top

Habit Huddle keeps HabitShare's individual streaks and adds groups ("huddles"), a shared group streak, monthly seasons with leaderboards, streak freezes and a vacation mode. It has a free tier and a web app. It launched in late 2025, so the community is still small, and the paid tiers are the priciest here.

Pros

  • Free tier
  • Individual streaks plus a group streak
  • Streak freezes and vacation mode
  • Web and Discord

Cons

  • Builder from $8/mo, Champion from $16/mo
  • Feature-dense
  • Small community so far
Price: Free tier; Builder from $8/moPlatforms: Web, iOS, Android, DiscordBest for: People who want streaks plus a community
B

HabitShare for exactly two people

If you used HabitShare with one friend, BuddyUp does that pair thing with more structure: one buddy, a goal tracked as a streak or a number, and optional head-to-head stakes. It's free with no in-app purchases. Apple-only and very new (late 2025).

Pros

  • Free, no in-app purchases
  • Numeric goals
  • Built for pairs

Cons

  • No Android
  • Few reviews yet
  • Pairs only
Price: FreePlatforms: iOS, iPadOS, macOSBest for: Two iPhone users

Time-boxed challenges with friends

Squad trades HabitShare's open-ended tracking for challenges of one to four weeks. Private squads with friends are free; public squads use credits as stakes. It's on both platforms and has been around since 2022.

Pros

  • Free with friends
  • Structured 10, 21 and 30-day challenges
  • Both platforms

Cons

  • Challenges end after four weeks
  • No leaderboard
  • Credits cost money in public squads
Price: Free with friends; credits from $9.99; Pro $8.99/moPlatforms: iOS, AndroidBest for: Groups who like a sprint

For when the friends were the problem

HabitShare depends on friends who keep tracking. Cohorty removes that dependency by matching you into a cohort of 5 to 15 strangers on the same 7 to 30-day challenge. Check-ins are visible, comments optional. Free at the time of checking.

Pros

  • No friends needed
  • Free
  • Low-noise

Cons

  • Strangers
  • No Android yet
  • Cohort ends with the challenge
Price: Free (premium planned)Platforms: Web, iOSBest for: People whose friends stopped checking in

If you'd like a game with it

Habitica's parties give you shared consequences — miss a daily and the party takes damage — inside an RPG. Free, with a cosmetic subscription at $4.99 a month. Far more to set up than HabitShare, and the friends layer sits behind the game.

Pros

  • Free
  • Parties with real shared stakes
  • Web and mobile

Cons

  • Complex
  • Gaming metaphor
  • No simple leaderboard
Price: Free; Plus $4.99/mo (cosmetic)Platforms: Web, iOS, AndroidBest for: RPG fans

What HabitShare does well, and where it stopped

HabitShare deserves its reputation. It's free, it runs on both iPhone and Android, it lets you share each habit with exactly the friends you choose, and it has a 4.6 rating from 660 reviews on the App Store. For "let my friends see my streak" it still works.

Two things push people to look for an alternative. First, the App Store listing has not been updated since January 2023, which usually means the app is in maintenance mode: it keeps working until an OS change breaks something. Second, it was never built for doing a habit together. There's no shared challenge, no leaderboard, and nobody is told when you skip. The social part is passive.

So the question isn't "which app is better than HabitShare" but "what did you want HabitShare to be". The list below is organised around that.

Switching without losing your streaks

None of these apps import HabitShare data, and your streak numbers won't carry over. Two ways to handle it:

  • Start a fresh 30-day challenge in the new app with the same friends. A new start line is more motivating than a migrated counter anyway.
  • Keep HabitShare running for a month alongside the new app. If the group naturally moves to the new one, delete the old. If it doesn't, you've learned something about the group.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is HabitShare free?

Yes, HabitShare is completely free on iOS and Android, with no premium tier. That's part of why it's popular. The trade-off is that it hasn't received an App Store update since January 2023.

Is HabitShare still being updated?

The App Store listing shows the last update in January 2023, and the website's copyright notice reads 2022. The app still works, but there's no sign of active development.

What is the best alternative to HabitShare?

Daily Pact, if you want to do habits with friends as shared challenges with a leaderboard and notifications. Habit Huddle, if you want individual streaks plus a community and a free tier. BuddyUp, if it's just you and one friend on iPhone.

Is there a HabitShare alternative for Android?

HabitShare itself runs on Android. Among alternatives, Daily Pact, Habit Huddle, Squad and Habitica all have Android apps. BuddyUp is Apple-only and Cohorty is web and iOS.

Is there a free HabitShare alternative with groups?

Habit Huddle's free tier includes huddles. Squad is free for private squads with friends. Cohorty is free with matched cohorts. Daily Pact is free for 14 days, then $0.99 a month.
